Feature and Follow Friday


Wow. It feels like an age since I last participated in a Feature and Follow Friday (yeah, okay, it's only been a few months). My life has sort of got a bit busier in recent months and I have to often schedule posts ahead, meaning that I miss out on the spontaneous conversation and visiting that goes hand in hand with the meme. Anyway, I don't think it's very fair to schedule these ones ahead (because I like the whole social aspect of clicking on the list, seeing who is featured and meeting new bloggers,) so I usually opt out. Anyway, on this particular evening I'm home and blogging, so I hope it's a great chance to catch up with some old friends and to make some new ones.

Anyway ... for those of you who don't know, Feature and Follow Friday is a weekly meme designed to help book bloggers connect and meet one another. It two awesome hosts, Parajunkee and Alison Can Read and also showcases two very cool blogs. And there is always a question to answer. This weeks question is ...

Question of the Week: Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! What books did Santa stuff your stocking with this holiday season? Do a holiday book haul for us! If you don’t celebrate just show off your books that you got this week. Pictures!!!

I didn't receive any books in my Christmas stocking. I guess even Santa wasn't sure what is and is not on my epic to-read pile. (Seriously, one day I'm going to post a photograph of my to read pile and shock you all.) Still, I stopped by a very cool bookstore at Edwardstown today and bought a copy of Dreaming of Zhou Gong by Traci Harding. It is a bit different from the books that I usually read, so I am looking forward to the challenge. 

Anyway, I'm sure Santa was generous with you, but just in case he wasn't, while you are here you may be interested to know that I'm offering two of my novels, Behind the Scenes and Best Forgotten as free downloads from the Amazon Kindle Store at the moment. Behind the Scenes will only be available for a short time--it runs out at midnight Saturday PST, while Best Forgotten will be available until midnight Sunday PST. I'm in the same boat with you on everything. Haven't participated in one of these in a while and Santa never knows how to handle my reading list so it's hit and miss on how my xmas book pile looks.

Sorry, I'm quite positive that your to-read pile would not shock me. 20 years ago, my pile was over 6 feet tall. Then I stopped stacking them in a pile. Many of those books are still in that stack.

I usually don't post my FF way out either. I like to sit here and write them up on Thursday night. Of course then I might get lazy if I have to take pictures or something for it!!

Yeah ... FF can be tricky for me. It always starts at midday, Adelaide time. I'm usually at work so for obvious reasons I can't post then and I never know what the question is going to be until the day. So usually, I have to post several hours late, after I get home. The only time I ever scheduled a post was when I was the featured blogger ... and I remember having to do some quick repairs on my morning tea break with an iPhone so that the post would look good enough for everyone to see!

Charlie Brown, Lucy Van Pelt and the Football

One of the longest, and arguably, most infuriating, running gags in Charles Schulz's otherwise brilliant Peanuts comic strip, is where Lucy promises to hold a football for Charlie Brown and then pulls it away at the last minute, causing Charlie Brown to fall flat on his back. A typical strip looks like this: Source: Go Comics The gag is one of the darker themes in the strip. It works on the concept that every year, Lucy promises to hold a football for Charlie Brown. Phrases and Idioms: Tickets on Himself

To have tickets on himself: (Australian slang.) To be conceited or vain. To have an overinflated opinion of oneself.  He's got tickets on himself if he thinks that any woman would fall for that. I was thinking about this particular bit of Australian slang the other day, after my boss said, "He's got tickets on himself," to describe the actions of a particular individual. At the time, I smiled, knowing exactly what the boss meant. Later on, I started to ponder on this unusual phrase and wondered where it might have come from. A search on google helped me find the definition, but that was about all. There are no references to it being used in pop culture or literature (if you find one, let me know,) and at the time of writing this post, Tickets on Himself was not listed on Urban Dictionary.
