Follow Friday



Yes, it's that awesome time of week again, Follow Friday. For those of you who may have missed it, Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkie and Alison Can Read and is intended to help like minded bloggers network with one another. The great thing about this meme is that both of the hosts have a feature blog each week, and there is always a question that gets everyone talking. This week's question is:

Q: Fight! Fight! If you could have two fictional characters battle it out (preferably from books), who would they be and who do you think would win?


I would have Mr Darcy from Pride and Prejudice fight Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights simply because they are both iconic leading men of British Literature, but are so radically different from one another. Although Heathcliff is probably physically stronger, Mr Darcy would win through his intelligence, character and sense of fair play. Plus, unless your name is Elizabeth Bennet, you don't want to make Mr Darcy angry.

LOL. I love -- LOVE -- that every single other blog I have been to today on this hop has pulled from current YA fiction, and you went to Jane Austen and Emily Bronte. Love it.

Also, as soon as I saw your matchup, my thought was "PLEASE let Mr. Darcy win over jerky Heathcliff." And of course he did.

*sigh* I think we all kind of want our own Mr. Darcy

It's funny that you went for the other leading man in P&P to me. I went for the one full of hot air and you went for the one full of... better substance. Difference is, I'd love to see Wickham get thrashed in a fight. I'd have to see Darcy even in a fight. :p Nice picks though!

Charlie Brown, Lucy Van Pelt and the Football

One of the longest, and arguably, most infuriating, running gags in Charles Schulz's otherwise brilliant Peanuts comic strip, is where Lucy promises to hold a football for Charlie Brown and then pulls it away at the last minute, causing Charlie Brown to fall flat on his back. A typical strip looks like this: Source: Go Comics The gag is one of the darker themes in the strip. It works on the concept that every year, Lucy promises to hold a football for Charlie Brown. Phrases and Idioms: Tickets on Himself

To have tickets on himself: (Australian slang.) To be conceited or vain. To have an overinflated opinion of oneself.  He's got tickets on himself if he thinks that any woman would fall for that. I was thinking about this particular bit of Australian slang the other day, after my boss said, "He's got tickets on himself," to describe the actions of a particular individual. At the time, I smiled, knowing exactly what the boss meant. Later on, I started to ponder on this unusual phrase and wondered where it might have come from. A search on google helped me find the definition, but that was about all. There are no references to it being used in pop culture or literature (if you find one, let me know,) and at the time of writing this post, Tickets on Himself was not listed on Urban Dictionary.
